21st Century Technology

A 21st century technology that is still be changed today is Skype. Skype was created in 2003 and has changed how people can communicate to family, friends, and loved ones without having to spend an extreme amount of money to get in contact with friends, or family who live far away (Most Important Inventions of the 21st Century: in Pictures). Skype has changed how people get in touch when talking on the phone became too expensive especially for overseas calls Skype introduced a free way of getting contact with those family, and friends. Skype created a means of making things more personal to people, and giving us the feeling of being able to talk face to face even if we are hundreds of miles away.
What technologies lead up to the creation of Skype was the phone, and computer. The phone is important because it was one of the first ways besides the telegraph that allowed people to give and receive messages from loved ones. Now with phone, yes, one could get in touch with another but for people living overseas making international phone calls is expensive, and still is. With the introduction of Skype, it created a fast, and friendly way that was easy for anyone to use yes Skype has a limit to how many free minutes you can have but it was renewed every month, and if you wanted more minutes you could pay for them. Now people even use Skype or other alternatives to have job interviews. There are even more places that you can chat with people like oovoo, GoToMeeting, VSee, and more. Skype also seemed to have sparked in Apple the means of creating FaceTime which is Apple’s own version that lets you video call someone with an iPhone.
For the future, I can see how Skype could shape things like instead of staring at a screen we would have a hologram, and you could interact with the hologram. I think it would give people especially those who live far away, or are in long distance relationships would enjoy having since it might not be their partner but it still gives them the interaction that they are missing from their other half. It would also give it a personal touch for college students who live away from home, and were missing home (at least their parents are missing them) they could interact with their family, and family pet even. It would become more than just having a face to face meeting on a flat screen, instead you would be able to interact almost as if the person was there in the room with you it would be as if the person never left.
